As more Nigerians rely on the Blackberry phones for business and social networking, the level of addiction to the device is becoming more worrisome to people's health. It's addiction could be worse than drug addiction, AABlog gathered.
BB phone is not only becoming an indispensable tool for high flying Nigerians, the increasing demand for BB and current fad as a status symbol could result in widespread health hazards for Nigerians.
According to a report by Kunle Azzez, ICT Correspondent, Gbenga Arowora’s life revolves round his blackberry phone. He clutches it firmly all day and never for one moment lets it slip away from his firm grip until midnight when he places it carefully by his pillow as he finally goes to bed. The blackberry is his most dependable partner, a partner he must consult for all his businesses and a partner which also serves as a veritable link with his contacts around the world. Like most high-flying Nigerians, Arowora is addicted to the blackberry.
A recent survey revealed there are over 200,000 Nigerians already hooked on the blackberry now regarded as the most effective and efficient communication tool for business executives and also for staying connected to friends, relatives and associates on personal levels. Blackberry was originally manufactured for accessing emails while on the move but has since become a reliable integrated wireless communications platform. As it catches on fast among Nigerians, Blackberry is becoming so addictive that owners may need to be weaned off them with treatment similar to that given to drug users.
In what seems like a confirmation of a recent study by the New Jersey’s Rutgers University School, Blackberry is fuelling a rise in email and internet addiction, with sufferers able to survive only a few minutes without checking for new mail. Indeed, Arowora confessed that he is mostly unaware of people and events around him whenever he’s using the gadget. Now he even wakes up at night to chat with friends as his BB beeps all night.
Arowora is not alone. Mutiu Adeyemi, a banker told said he and his colleagues now rely on the BB to perform their daily tasks. He said his bank encouraged employees to buy the phone through a special in-house scheme “in order for us to be more efficient as we are able to work as if we are in the office for it helps to attend to assignments more quickly and easily.” This, of course, means they have to continue working even at home at odd hours.
Investigation reveals that the demand for BB is on the increase throughout Nigeria. This trend was confirmed by the Business Development Manager, Slots Systems Limited, one of the biggest phone retail outlets in the country, Mr. Patrick Egbulefu. According to him, more Nigerians now throng the company’s outlets daily requesting for BB, a situation he described as not surprising because of the enticing features of the phone.
Now, the BB has become a status symbol gadget in Nigeria as it has been turned into an index for measuring class status. Investigation reveals it is also being linked to criminal activities in the country. For instance, apart from its widespread use among business executives, political office holders and a number of celebrities in the country, some young Nigerian ladies have become so addicted to the use of the device that a minute parting with the gadget seems like dismembering them.
Their addiction to the device and desire to go extra miles to own a Blackberry phone was captured in a Nollywood film titled: Blackberry Babes by Simony Pictures. The movie, which runs part 1 and part 2, is a hilarious exposition of the Nigerian reality and growing BB addiction.
It is the story of a group of university friends, all female, whose social and private lives are centred on the supposedly fascinating world of BB phones. Unable to fund their addiction, the girls rely on rich men to buy them the latest models. But phones, money and other treats come at a price: In return, the girls offer these men sex and/or companionship and the whole thing turns into a rather pathetic competition – the aim being to get the latest Blackberry model before everyone else and “flaunt” it wherever they go. The use of Blackberry phones as a tool for prostitution and other licentious activities is another negative development that has become a reality in Nigeria today.
A Lagos-based female National Youth Service Corps member, who pleaded anonymity recalled how some of her friends fraternised with the so-called big men just to acquire Blackberry phones. “After acquiring the BB, they venture into some funny games by posting their Blackberry PIN numbers to social networking sites for prospective customers and as expected, they receive calls from clients and soon begin to chat endlessly until the men are hooked. My friends have since been dating the rich men who carry them from one hotel to another and also contract them to their male friends in exchange for money which they (the Blackberry girls) use to settle their monthly internet access fees.
"At times, they would take x-rated pictures of themselves and circulate to prospective clients through their BB. They are making a lot of money now. I have since kept away from them because I cannot cope with their current ‘status’. I don’t have a Blackberry and I can’t imagine myself indulging in such a dirty game,” the female Corps member stressed

Actress Shan George In Sex Scandal With 21yrs Old Boy, Four Others
If report by BON is anything to go by, then controversial Nollywood actress, Shan George may be in big trouble with former PMAN president, Tee Mac Omatsola.
This is because, according to what was reported, Shan George, who recently accused some married actresses of sleeping around with men like dogs, is being alleged of nursing a sizzling romance with the Tee Mac's 21-year-old son.
As reported, Shan was alleged to have slept with about four band members of Tee Mac, who we learnt were young guys, during the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa in 2010. She reportedly gave the excuse of cold weather as the reason of having sex with the boys.

Panic In Nigeria's Security Over Negative Movie On Prophet Muhammed
The Federal Government of Nigeria is already taking measures to prevent crises against a controversial movie said to have painted Prophet Muhammed in bad light.

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, on Wednesday said in addition to placing all police formations in the country on high alert, “the AIG in charge of Intelligence and Commissioners of Police in charge of the various Police Special Squads such as the Counter Terrorism Unit, Police Mobile Force and Special Protection Unit have been directed to ensure that their personnel are strategically deployed to prevent and nip all potential crisis in the bud.”
The statement quoted the IG as assuring law abiding Nigerians of the readiness and capacity of the police to provide adequate security for them and their property.
It warned those it described as “potential trouble-makers” to stay off the streets as the nation’s security agencies would bring the full weight of the law to bear on them.

Morenike Popoola kidnapped in Lagos

Driver Sacks Boss After Winning One Million On Star Game Show
They say victory loves careful preparation, right? Luck shone on Emeka John at the oddest of places…..a beer parlour. Well, Emeka is a trailer driver who was spotted drinking bottles of Star lager beer just at the right time and the right place. Unknown to him, Star was giving away instant gift prizes for Star drinkers through a raffle draw. Emeka was given some prizes including a raffle ticket to participate in Star TV Game Show in Lagos.
Emeka was flown to Lagos, all expenses paid, from his base in Benin, just to participate in the Game Show. Since Star Game Show is team-based, he was by sheer luck grouped alongside David Smith and Ugwu Chukwuemeka. At the end of the games, the trio emerged the winning team. Each team member pocketed N1 million for their victory.
When he was asked about how he felt winning N1 million, Emeka did not waste time in announcing his resignation. He declared: “My days of working for other people are over. I will use this N1 million to buy my own truck.”
If indeed he truly plans to buy his own truck, we wish him well in his future endeavours as an entrepreneur. But if he just uttered those words on the spur of the moment or out of sheer excitement, we can only hope that his boss neither gets to watch that particular episode of Star Game Show on TV stations; nor read this particular post!

Mr. Jonathan hastily left a state luncheon organized for him in Botswana and headed straight for the airport. After a short visit to a mine by helicopter, he met with the Nigerian community at the airport, and then boarded his presidential jet bound for Abuja.
Several sources in Malawi and Bostwana earlier told SaharaReporters that Mr. Jonathan’s surprise departure for Abuja left some members of his contingent wondering if the First Lady had passed on.
“Before he went into his residence today, the president told some of his senior aides that it is his wife is still alive,” said a source in Abuja.
Calls and text messages to Mr. Jonathan's spokesman, Reuben Abati, were not answered.
Speculations remain rife in Abuja that the condition of the president's wife may have taken a dire turn.

A source traveling with Jonathan in Malawi and Botswana told SaharaReporters that the president’s surprising and sudden departure has increased speculations among members of his delegation that his wife’s health condition may have taken a bad turn. “Some of us are even fearing that the First Lady may be dead,” our source said.
Mr. Jonathan arrived this morning in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, after a state visit to Malawi. He was scheduled to stay in Botswana until tomorrow. However, Jonathan hurriedly left for the airport in Gaborone in the middle of a state luncheon. After hopping on a helicopter to visit a mine, he returned to the airport and hurriedly met members of the Nigerian community. He then got on his presidential jet and took off, leaving his ministers and other members of his delegation behind in Botswana.
Our source said that Mr. Jonathan told a few members of the delegation that he was headed back to Abuja. But, according to the source, several members of the president’s entourage suspect he may be headed to Germany to see his wife, Patience Jonathan, who is admitted to a hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany.
“The president appeared to be in a pensive mood as he left Botswana,” our source said.
Since yesterday, there have been speculations among government officials in Abuja that the ailing First Lady may have died.
Our source in Botswana stated that Jonathan should arrive in Abuja in about an hour – if he was truly headed back for Nigeria.

PDP, ACN In War Of Words Over Tinubu's Invitation By Obama
Action Congress of Nigeria has criticised the Peoples Democratic Party for claiming that ACN National Leader, Bola Tinubu was not invited by the United States President Barrack Obama to attend the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
But PDP is insisting that Tinubu must apologise to Nigerians for bringing the country into disrepute by claiming he was "specially" invited to attend the Convention in the US.
The PDP National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Chief Segun Oni, through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said PDP should not be held responsible for the “lies” of Tinubu.
On it's part, the ACN, in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the PDP was guilty of the misinformation and falsehood.
It described the allegation as “a needless smear campaign”, saying the reaction of the PDP was “symptomatic of an indolent, frightened and seemingly intimidated government suffering from misplaced priorities and whose past time is peddling rumours, half truths and disinformation”.
ACN said, “In the first instance, at no time during this entire needless controversy, did we issue a statement concerning Tinubu’s attendance or invitation to the DNC and we challenge the PDP propagandists-in-chief to produce evidence to the contrary.
“It was the Tinubu Media Office that issued a self-explanatory statement where Tinubu never claimed he was personally invited to the convention.”
However the PDP is sticking to its position. The statement said, “To us in the PDP, the most honourable thing for these fraudulent elements in the ACN to do is to own up to the fake personality that Tinubu, their leader, has become and apologise to Nigerians for ridiculing the country with their lies of Tinubu’s invitation by Obama.”
“Now that Tinubu is being faced with the consequences of his world of lies, is it PDP that must be blamed? Or was it PDP that made Tinubu, in his characteristic manner to lie that he was invited and given a ‘Gold Card’ to attend the Democratic Party Convention when in actual fact, he bought his invitation with $5,000?.”

OBASANJO IS A VERY BAD ECONOMIST – Sanusi
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, on Tuesday, described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as “a very bad economist.”
He added that he was surprised that the former President could oppose the proposed N5,000 note given that the high currency denominations in the country, including N1000 note, came into being during his (Obasanjo) regime.
Sanusi, while speaking at the sixth annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in Abuja, said Obasanjo misinterpreted the impact of the proposed N5000 note on the economy when he argued that it would cause inflation.
“This is an interesting country because my uncle or my father, who is our former Head of State, Gen. Obasanjo, you know he is a very successful farmer, but he is a very bad economist. He stand up and says that this higher denomination (N5000 note) will cause inflation and improve hardship,” Sanusi told the conference participants.
Obasanjo had at a roundtable advocacy forum organised by the Institute of Directors, Nigeria, in Lagos, last Thursday submitted that the N5000 note would kill production and affect small businesses negatively.
He said the way Sanusi is fighting inflation by removing money from circulation was improper.
The former President wondered why the CBN wanted to introduce the new notes and said if all that the bank was focused on was to fight inflation, “then it will kill production.”
He said, “I understand that now he is focused on fighting inflation, which is a good idea. But if this (N5000 note) and all that he is focused on is fighting inflation, it will kill production.”
But Sanusi said, “Gen. Obasanjo did N20, he did N100, N200, N500 and N1,000. He introduced higher denominations in Nigeria than any other head of state. He did a N100 note in 1999, he did N200 in 2000, he did N500 two years later and in that period inflation was coming down because it was accompanied by prudent fiscal and monetary policy.
“For somebody (Obasanjo) who had done this to stand up and say introducing a higher denomination will cause inflation must be an empirical, most important determinant of inflation in our country given the number of notes he had printed."

Presidency Replaces Aides Around First Lady In German Hospital
The Presidency has replaced security aides around first lady Patience Jonathan in order to keep her affairs private at the Wiesbaden, Germany hospital, Horst Schmidt Kliniken, following speculations about her health, TheWill can report.
A security source with knowledge of the development told TheWill that the Presidency’s action followed reports of her medical sojourn to the hospital, believed to have been leaked by someone amongst the team of six aides dispatched to Germany ahead of her arrival.The aides were withdrawn and replaced with a new team of six security aides from the SSS, our source said, adding that when the replacement team, made up of more experienced and trusted aides arrived Germany, they were stripped of other phones and directed to stay off the social media and the internet.
The Presidency has kept mum since reports of the first lady’s treatment in the German hospital hit the media. There have been speculations surrounding her ailment and what exactly she is being treated for.
President Goodluck Jonathan has not visited his wife since her hospitalization about three weeks ago. A top level official in the Botswana government, one of the two countries the President had visited on a 3-day working tour told THEWILL source that the President abruptly cancelled a scheduled engagement this evening and made straight for the airport heightening fears that the first lady’s condition may have deteriorated.
THEWILL has not been able to independently confirm where the President is headed.
President Jonathan was scheduled to leave Gaborone, the Botswana capital on Wednesday.
Several calls to the President’s spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati with a 3-hour period to get a reaction were unsuccessful as his phones were switched off.

Worshippers of the World Liberation Ministry located along old Sapele-Benin express road on Tuesday took to their heels during a prophesy programme when a female member delivered a horse.
The horse was however dead by the time Journalists visited the church. It was gathered that the woman whose identity was not yet known started screaming during the prayer session and began to bleed from the vagina before the horse came out.
The General Overseer of the church, Evangelist Silva Wealth, said he was still amazed at what came out of the woman.
He told Journalists that during prayers a revelation came that there was a woman with an issue and that something was blocking her womb.
Silva said as prayers intensified, the woman started screaming and bleeding started when the object came out.
The cleric said he couldn’t confirm whether the horse was dead or alive because he didn’t go near it.

A star footballer is to go on trial accused of torturing and killing his mistress, then feeding her dismembered body parts to his pet dogs.
Married Bruno Fernandes de Souza, 27, a goalkeeper once tipped to play for Brazil, is alleged to have turned model Eliza Samudio 'into a human sacrifice' to preserve his reputation after she gave birth to his love child.
He is already serving a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence after being convicted of assaulting and abducting Ms Samudio, 25, but will be tried for her murder later this year.
Prosecutors allege that Bruno planned Ms Samudio's kidnap and murder with eight others, including his wife Dayane, a teenage cousin and former detective Luiz Santos, all of whom have been charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and kidnapping.
The goalkeeper, who played for Brazilian club Flamengo, is said to have watched as Santos committed 'barbaric tortures' on Ms Samudio before helping the former detective dismember her body.
Parts of the woman's body are alleged to have been fed to Bruno's dogs while the rest was buried in concrete.
Bruno is accused of ordering his wife to tell people that his love child, who was four months old at the time of the killing, had been adopted by them from a poor relative.
It is also claimed that Bruno told police Ms Samudio was 'a whore who will not be missed by anyone'.
A Brazilian newspaper has reported that the prosecution at the trial will allege that Bruno attacked a supporter, smoked cannabis and attended orgies with fellow players.
Edson Moreira, a detective who investigated the case, told the Sunday Express: 'An idol like Bruno, from such a major team, has turned out to be a monster.
'We have witnesses who will testify that he turned this girl into a human sacrifice merely to try to protect his reputation.'
The trial is expected to hear that Bruno met Ms Samudio at a party held by a teammate.
'Unfortunately for her, they slept together that night and she later discovered she was pregnant,' Mr Moreira said. 'When she approached de Souza and told him he was the father, he became enraged.
Prosecutors will allege that Bruno planned Ms Samudio's murder after she told him she would take legal action to prove he was the father of her child.
In a statement to police, his cousin claimed that, led by Santos, they kidnapped Ms Samudio from a hotel in Rio de Janeiro on June 4, 2010.
He said they drove her some 220 miles to a property in Belo Horizonte which the footballer and his wife used occasionally as a weekend retreat, where Ms Samudio was tortured.
It is claimed that Santos played loud music on the stereo to drown out the woman's screams.
Bruno, whose contract with Flamengo has been suspended, also faces charges of kidnapping, hiding a body and forming a criminal gang with intent to murder.
He has maintained his innocence throughout, claiming he has a 'clear conscience'.

Presidency silent as rumour of First Lady’s death spreads

(News Express) A rumour about the purported death of Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has started making the rounds as she remains incommunicado for the third straight week.
Following enquiries by anxious Nigerians who wanted to know if the story of the First Lady’s alleged death is true or not, News Express put a call across to Dr. Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, around noon. His phone rang but was not picked.
News Express then sent a text message to Dr. Abati, requesting his comment on the news. About four hours later, the presidential spokesman is yet to reply even though the phone showed that the message was delivered. Dr. Abati had on Tuesday evening last week (Sept. 4) dismissed Dame Jonathan’s reported illness as a rumour after News Express and some other media reported her medical trip to Germany.
As reported by News Express on Sept. 5, a spokesperson for Horst Schmidt Klinik, the hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, where Dame Jonathan is believed to be receiving treatment, had revealed that she was in a bad state of health when she arrived the hospital for treatment two weeks ago.
The official disclosed that initial records showed that the Nigerian President’s wife had earlier been treated for food poisoning back home before being brought to Horst Schmidt Klinik, where she underwent a major surgery for a ruptured appendix to remove the poisons in her intestine.
Though admitting that Dame Jonathan travelled to Germany, presidency spokesmen had claimed that she went for a rest but kept sealed lips on her whereabouts.
Horst Schmidt Klinik is gradually becoming a choice hospital of Nigerian top government officials. It was the same hospital that late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua once received for kidney-related ailments.
