14 Students Expelled After They Were "Caught In The Act"

Parents really need to exercise some measure of control over the children in institutions of higher learning so as to make them face their studies rather than join deadly gangs.

Authority of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) on Wednesday expelled 14 students of the institution over the role they played in the aborted Students’ Union election which the management described as an “act of gross misconduct.”

The suspended students, whose studentship cuts across all the departments of the five schools in the institution were said to have been “caught in the act” perpetration violence, following the crisis that marred the election.

The development also forced the authority of the institution to cancel the election and consequently proscribed the students’ union movement in the school.

Speaking with journalists in his office, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Sulaiman Adebiyi, said the development became imperative following the disruption of the SUG election in which some students took the law into their hands and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.

Sporadic gunshots were heard at the premises of the institution as some students were said to be protesting the disqualification of their candidates at the said election.

At Last Jonathan Orders Sanusi to Stop N5000 Note

The controversial N5000 note has finally been killed and buried, AABLOG gathered. On Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan bowed to pressure from Nigerians as he directed the CBN  Governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, to stop the much-criticised high currency.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati, disclosed the development to State House correspondents in Abuja.

Abati told journalists that Jonathan’s latest disposition to the issue was based on the need for more “enlightenment and consultation”.

He said, “The introduction of the new note is being suspended for now to enable the CBN do more enlightenment on the issue.Yes, President Jonathan has directed that the implementation of the new N5,000 note be suspended for now.

“This is to enable the apex bank to do more in terms of enabling Nigerians understand why it proposed it in the first place. So, for now, the full implementation is on hold.”

The CBN, in a statement on Thursday, also confirmed that it had received a presidential directive to stop action on the currency restructuring plan.

The statement by the apex bank’s spokesperson, Ugo Okoroafor, reads, “The CBN hereby informs the general public that the President, on Thursday, September 20, 2012, directed that further action on the approved restructuring exercise be stopped.

“It is important to stress that till date, no contract whatsoever has been awarded by the CBN in connection with the printing and minting of the new currency notes and coins. Consequently, no currency note or coin has been printed or minted under the proposed exercise.”

Obviously, the planned introduction of the note had attracted a huge outcry in the public domain. Those against the move had hinged their position on the fact that it could worsen inflation in the country. Many also said it was contrary to the apex bank’s cash-less policy.

At resumption on Tuesday, both arms of the National Assembly passed resolutions asking the CBN not to go ahead with the plan. But the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, said that the resolutions are advisory.

From what Olufamous.com gathered,  the suspension might be government’s way of cancelling the project without much fuss.

Reacting to the latest development, an economist, Mr. Olujimi Boyo, said the President should have cancelled the project instead of suspending it.

He said, “This is an indication that it may still be revived. If the President has really considered people’s opinion on this action by the CBN, then it should be stopped and not suspended. Telling them to do more work on the project is not what the people are calling for.

“The CBN needs to do more research on what is really affecting the value of the naira, instead of introducing a higher currency or even redenomination. Both moves are not what we need to stabilise our currency. They should find out what can be done to address inflation because this is the main reason why they keep talking about redenomination or introduction of higher currency.

“If the CBN is claiming that the introduction of higher currency will complement the cash-less policy, then they are wrong because redenomination would have been better,” Boyo added.

Also, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had at a roundtable advocacy forum organised by the Institute of Directors, Nigeria, in Lagos, submitted that the N5000 note would kill production and affect small businesses negatively.

How You Can Build A Successful Relationship And Marriage By Sam Oye

You Can Still Have A Successful Marriage And Relationship If....

There are few things to remember if you desire to have a successful marriage/relationship:

TO THE WOMEN: Men are expected to show love but, remember that they don’t always read your mind to know your desires. They watch news and read newspapers; they don’t always know your expectations.

If you think that something is very important to you, let your man know. Don’t assume that “he should know” what matters to you, if it truly matters to you, tell him. Confronting a man with the pain of your undeclared and unrealized expectations usually leads most men into a state of confusion, isolation, and frustration.

Most men don’t have a clue about what is important to you until you tell them about it. And, sometimes you might need to remind them about it over and over again before they get it.

TO THE MEN: You are in relationship with a woman to show her love. What you do for her is wonderful but, what you do together with her is much more critical to the success of your relationship. You cannot use what you give to your woman to replace who you are to her.

There is no material present (gift) that can compare with the gift of your presence in the life of your woman. She wants YOU and not just what you GIVE. She WANTS your gifts and NEEDS your presence. She will appreciate your gift and celebrate your presence. If you can’t get her a Gift, be there for her. Your presence, attention, and affection are gifts of inestimable value. She needs You!

You will Succeed! You will fulfil your destiny!

Latest Discovery: Banana Can Prevent HIV Infection

Your favorite oblong fruit might be even healthier than you realized. According to The Gazette (Montreal) newspaper, a new study has found that chemicals commonly found in bananas are as potent in preventing HIV as two synthetic anti-HIV drugs.

Researchers say the findings could lead to a cheap new component for applied microbicides that prevent intimate transmission of HIV.

The miracle substance in bananas is called BanLec, a type of lectin, which are the sugar-binding proteins found in a variety of plants. Scientists have long been interested in lectins because of their ability to halt the chain reaction that leads to certain viral infections. In the case of BanLec, it works by binding naturally to the sugar-rich envelope that encases the HIV virus, thus blocking its entry into the body.

"The problem with some HIV drugs is that the virus can mutate and become resistant, but that's much harder to do in the presence of lectins," said lead author Michael D. Swanson. "Lectins can bind to the sugars found on different spots of the HIV-1 envelope, and presumably it will take multiple mutations for the virus to get around them."

Swanson and his colleagues noted that even modest success in developing BanLec into a womanly or BehindBased microbicide could save millions of lives. In fact, 20 percent coverage with a microbicide that is only 60 percent effective against HIV may prevent up to 2.5 million HIV infections in three years.

Furthermore, a BanLec ointment would be much cheaper to produce and distribute than most current anti-retroviral medications that require the production of synthetic components.

One thing's for sure: new ways of stopping the transmission of HIV are desperately needed. Condoms are effective, but they are often used incorrectly or inconsistently, and in many cultures and developing countries women are not always in control of their intimate encounters.

The introduction of a cheap, long-lasting, self-applied ointment derived naturally from bananas could change all of that.

Female NYSC Member Drags Husband To Court One Year After Marriage

A 28-year-old youth corps member on Tuesday asked for the dissolution of her one-year-old marriage, citing incompatibility with her estranged husband.

The petitioner, Ngozi Ekeh, told an Ojo Customary Court in Lagos that she was always having frequent disagreements with Onyekachi Ekeh since they got married about one year ago.

The female corps member told the court that she started cohabiting with Ekeh during her service year, until he paid her bride price.

“Since I got married to my husband, we have never agreed on an issue as a couple, it has always been quarrels and fights.

“In a nutshell, I think we are not compatible at all,” she said.

She told the court that she was separated from her husband in 2011, adding that she had since lived with her parents.

Ngozi, therefore, sought for the dissolution of the union, stressing that nothing could make her return to the marriage.

The respondent was absent from court.

The Acting Court President, Mr. S.B Giwa, ordered that a hearing notice be issued to the respondent to appear in court on the next adjourned date of October 16.

President Jonathan May Reverse Introduction Of Single N5,000 Note

Barely 24 hours after the National Assembly vowed to move against the proposed currency restructuring exercise and the introduction of N5,000 banknote by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), there are  indications that the project may be shelved.

Investigations showed that President Goodluck Jonathan met behind closed doors with the leadership of the National Assembly on Tuesday night where the two arms of government reviewed the project and agreed in principle to explore the possibility of shelving it.

Both chambers of the National Assembly, after debates at their plenary sessions on Tuesday, had adopted motions rejecting the project.

In separate motions, the parliamentarians unanimously voted against the currency restructuring exercise and urged Jonathan to direct the CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to halt it.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who addressed journalists after the plenary, said the Senate considered the matter as very urgent because of the likely impact of the currency restructuring exercise on the populace.

He said the resolution of the Senate is that the proposed action of the CBN was illegal because it directly contravenes Section 4(2) of the constitution which states: “The National Assembly shall have power to make laws, order good governance of the federation or any part thereof on any matter included in the exclusive legislative list set out in Part 1 of the Second Schedule of this Constitution.”

However, the House directed its Committee on Banking and Currency to conduct an investigation into the planned restructuring of the currency and report back in four weeks.
While the investigation lasts, the House said the CBN must suspend all plans and processes towards the actualisation of the project.
Although there was no formal briefing on what transpired at the secret meeting between Jonathan and the National Assembly leadership, sources confirmed that the presidency was persuaded to drop the project because of the perceived negative impact it will have on the economy.

Jonathan was also said to be getting weary of swimming against the tide of public opinion and the rage of the parliament.
THISDAY learnt that one of the reasons behind the plan to shelve the introduction of the N5,000 banknote was because  the president, notwithstanding the fact that he had approved the project, is having a rethink based on the strong opposition to the exercise.

The House of Representatives yesterday held a prolonged executive session where, it was learnt, lawmakers were briefed on the latest development on the issue.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, briefed his colleagues on a wide-range of issues, including the currency project, finances of the House and the legislative agenda of the lower chamber.
According to one of the sources, Tambuwal, during the meeting, calmed frayed nerves over the House’s finances and refocused attention on the legislative agenda launched about a year ago.
Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, could neither deny nor confirm the secret meeting.

All he said was that the likelihood of the project being shelved following the legislative intervention was high.
However, the growing discontent with the proposed introduction of the N5,000 banknote by the CBN and its plan to restructure the currency may have played into the hands of the Senate, which has resolved to exhume the amendment to the CBN Act that could rid it of its autonomy.

THISDAY learnt that the Senate intends to retable the issue of CBN’s autonomy today during its plenary and tie it to the banking system regulator’s decision to restructure the currency as the perfect reason why the central bank should be stripped of its autonomy and made answerable to the National Assembly.
The amendment to the CBN Act suffered a blow four months ago when during the public hearing on the amendment bill, sponsored by Senator Ita Enang, it was defeated 27 – 0 following public opposition to the bill.
However, the Senate, THISDAY gathered, has decided to capitalise on the current disenchantment with the CBN over the proposed restructuring of the currency and introduction of the N5,000 banknote to re-introduce the amendment to the Act.
But reacting to the development last night, financial sector analysts criticised the move by the Senate, saying the currency restructuring exercise should not be mixed up with the central bank’s autonomy.

The truck unfortunately crashed into two commercial buses dropping passengers at the Ijebu-Ode junction, killing all passengers inside one bus, some already out of another bus and some okada men trying to pick up passengers at the bus stop.

Why Senators, Reps Kill Sanusi's N5,000 Note

The National Assembly on Tuesday passed different resolutions asking President Goodluck Jonathan to stop the Central Bank of Nigeria from introducing its controversial N5000 note.

Members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives resumed from their recesses on Tuesday with the controversial plan by the CBN taking the front burner.

While the Senate unanimously adopted a motion urging “The President and to direct the CBN to stop all actions on the issuance of the proposed N5000 note and all matters connected therewith,” the House members directed the apex bank to put the plan on hold for four weeks.

The House also queried the legality of Jonathan’s Economic Management Committee and its competence in approving the currency review plan.

The Senators said the CBN’s plan to introduce the N5000 note without the input of Nigerians representatives is illegal because Section 4(1 and 2) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 8(2) of the CBN Act of 2007 require the National Assembly to be part of the process of introducing a new currency review.

The resolution arose from a motion by Senator Ita Enang (Akwa Ibom North), asking Sanusi to halt action on the proposed currency.

Leading the debate on the motion, Enang said the Senate was aware of section 18 of the CBN Act, 2007, which conferred on the bank, the power to arrange for the printing of the currency notes and minting of coins among others.

He said the Senate was also aware of section 19 of the Act which allowed the bank to issue denominations and fractions with the approval of the President on the recommendation of the board.

He said, “The power being granted by the Legislature is subject to the supervisory powers of the Legislature which granted or donated the powers under the Act if the exercise of the powers is contrary to good economic conscience and the wellbeing of the people and the national economy.

“The introduction of the said N5000 note and the withdrawal of notes, conversion of some to coins and general redenomination of the naira has the ultimate effect of devaluing the naira, making lower currencies to be coined, almost non-value monies for transactions and subtly yield to the off-demand of certain international financial institutions for the devaluation of our currency.

“Section 4(1 and 2) of the constitution vests the legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the National Assembly to make laws for the peace and good governance of the federation or any part thereof; whereas this policy of the bank on the Naira may not lead to good economic and monetary governance of Nigeria requiring re-examination by the legislature.”

Enang also said that the currency plan negated the the newly introduced cashless transaction policy. “In cashless economies, high bills or currency notes such as the proposed N5000 is not required as transactions are conducted from the payer to the payee’s accounts without any need for physical exchange or handling of cash by any of the parties," he said.
When asked for his reaction, Sanusi said "no comment

It was really enraging to hear that shortly after the forced resignation of Bart Nnaji from the Power Portfolio, a group of foreign “investors” in the ongoing power reform and privatisation programme assembled into a pressure group and stormed the power ministry to show their concern over the minister’s resignation and declare their confidence in his supposedly singular capacity to implement the programme successfully.

Tongues-in-cheek, the mainly European Nnaji’s freaks were posturing belligerently over the resignation as if to say “we no go gree”.

Well, agreed they had to, not only because they have no choice but also because, as agents of certain transnational contractors interested in the mega-billion naira power contracts, their selfish motives were glaring. This incident is a pointer to the level of propaganda and photo-trick that has been triggered all in a bid to depict Nnaji with a holier-than-thou aura of indispensability that he does not exude. In putting the Nnaji affair in correct perspective, we must first discard the unwarranted ambivalence of President Goodluck Jonathan on the circumstances of the resignation of the professor if only to save the president from the mess that spews from this authenticated version of events.

Politically – and even humanly – it would have been foolhardy to go to Onitsha amid the humiliation of their prominent son without providing some sort of a soft-landing for him, such as to say he did nothing wrong when he so obviously ended up a misfit for that matter. Considering the strategic sensitivity of the power sector reform in the Jonathan Transformation Agenda, it will take more than a slight misdemeanour to sustain the shocks of confidence and credibility that rattled the reform process as a direct fallout of Nnaji’s sudden resignation.

Be that as it may, there is no denying the well-established involvement of Nnaji in big-time business dealings in the nation’s power sector in general and electricity in particular before he became a minister and so the assignment of the Power Ministry to him, though well-intentioned, was a calculated error in the first place.

One can still recall the shrill protests from the power trade unions which had more than a casual insight into these and other sticky points from the professor’s previous appointments in the sector. It was therefore hardly surprising that the circumstances of his resignation were not unconnected to his pecuniary interest in the handling of the implementation process of the power sector reform which is now an open secret. Government and business circles are buzzing with the shielded details of what culminated in the induced resignation of Nnaji from the Jonathan cabinet.

The most credible account revolves around the Afam Power Station whose planned privatisation and the barely concealed interest of a company owned by the former minister became an Achille’s heel. The whole issue of disclosure of pecuniary interest and so-called blind trust referred to in feeble defense of the professor pale into not only irrelevance but insignificance, given the established fact that such moves were made belatedly.

In fact, the said company had already participated in the process and even emerged a successful bidder for the Afam station and it was in outrage that the other bidders raised dust about the matter. Notwithstanding the fact that the Australian company, which was supposedly engaged to champion the bid had no link whatsoever with Skipper, the minister’s company. Bemused staff of the Power Ministry reportedly took special interest in capturing the identity of the lady who came to submit the bid for the Afam station for the said company in view of her matrimonial relationship with the former minister.

Worse still, Power Ministry staff were not impressed at all by the fact that their ministry was represented in the handling of the bidding process by so-called assistants employed by the professor. But this episode only provided a peep hole into more startling snippets of indiscretions associated with the former minister’s involvement with the Afam Power station’s unbundling process.

While his company was neck-deep in acquiring the station by compromising the bidding process, the minister was busy pushing a memo seeking Federal Executive Council approval to expend over N7 billion on revamping the out-of-service Afam Power Station into an operational status that would have amounted to a surreptitious rehabilitation subsidy for his company that was poised to win the bidding process.

He was actually so confident of getting the FEC approval that he gave go-ahead to Siemens Company to proceed with preliminary rehabilitation of the gas turbine and auxiliary components of the station with an approval to spend a large chunk of money.

At the end of the day, his memo failed to secure FEC approval, scuttling his anticipatory commitment of Siemens and leaving the German firm with the dilemma of an unsecured liability of N420 million it now has a zero chance of recovering except from the former minister. Latest reports indicate that the firm is frantically seeking an inroad into the power sector reform projects as a means of recovering this bad debt from the ill-fated Afam preliminary rehabilitation works. It is certainly part of the ploy that those European “investors” organised their diplomatic picketing of the Power Ministry after Nnaji’s exit but given the murkiness of the core issues of the Nnaji Affair it is bound to be an exercise in futility.

While these issues stick out prominently like the proverbial sore thumb in the Nnaji Affair, it is no less unsettling to learn that the former minister’s response has been far from remorseful as he not only activated grand designs within the power sector parastatals where his protégés were strategically planted earlier in order to sustain the bogey of innocence and indispensability that he vainly hopes will rewrite history and turn back the hands of time in his unceremoniouslyterminated ministerial tenure, but is frantically making efforts to drag the hardearned reputation of some distinguished Nigerians to the mud through sponsored media onslaught.

Tongues have ultimately been wagging over the roles of Nolsrem and Bulk Trader chief executives supposedly planted by Nnaji as a prelude to gaining absolute control in the power privatisation process. Of course, this is still Nigeria where anything can happen but certain established facts and indicting precedents just cannot be wished away, particularly under the Jonathan administration’s much-touted transformation agenda hinged as it is on fighting corruption and salvaging the comatose power sector.

With the commitment of the president towards successfully completing the power privatisation programme coupled with the zeal and determination of his subordinates, we are confident that these inherent minor challenges orchestrated by smalltime mischief-makers will soon be a thing of the past while the ovation for a successful reform is being celebrated.
