The Bank will also use this opportunity to elucidate further the cardinal thrust of AMCON's three-pronged approach in their divestment process as follows:

-         Appoint advisers (now done today) with a term of reference of up to 6months

-         Listing of shares on the Capital Market and/or Invitation of investor(s) to respond to RFP and go through due diligence process and allied matters.

Oando, Honeywell to buy PHCN distribution companies

Oando Consortium and Honeywell Energy Resources are among the 54 companies that have tendered their request to buy the eleven distribution companies from the unbundling of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) said yesterday that the companies met the July 31 deadline for the submission of technical and financial proposals for the privatisation of the eleven distribution companies.

A statement from the spokesman of BPE Chukwumah Nwokoh said other companies that met the deadline include; Skipper Nigeria Ltd; NAHCO Power Consortium; KANN Consortium Utility Company Ltd; Interstate Electrics Ltd; and ENL Consortium Ltd.

Others are Southern Electricity Distribution Company; Cable & Rods Company Nigeria Ltd; Copper Belt Consortium;  Rockson Engineering Company Ltd;  RENSMART Power Ltd; Duncan Freeman Company/Draytom Energy Ltd; and  Vigeo Power Consortium, among others.

40-foot container crushes car on Anthony bridge; kills three

 

This is my biggest fear, so I never drive close to a trailer. They are so reckless and their vehicles badly maintained.

The man you see in the photo above, plus two others in a Toyota Avalon car with registration number SQ 32 AAA, were killed around 7pm on Friday August 3rd on the Anthony Bridge, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, after a truck hauling a 40-foot container suddenly slipped off the flat-bed and fell on their car

The driver of the Toyota and another man in the car died instantly, but not the one in the photo. He called for help for over an hour but the people around had no means to lift the container off the car. Even LASEMA couldn't help because the container was too heavy. The man eventually died.


Finally, four hours after the accident, a crane was brought to lift the container off the mangled car. The bodies of the three men were taken to Gbagada General Hospital.

Gunmen Raid Deeper Life Church In Okene Killing 15 Worshippers

Unknown gunmen opened fire in a crowded Deeper Life church near the Federal College of Education in Okene, Kogi state late last night killing 15 worshipers in the church. Several worshipers were critically wounded in the attack according to the local government chairman in the area.

Emergency workers said the casualty will likely increase in a few hours. Soldiers and police from the Joint Task Force in the state have cordoned off the area.

Al Mustapha's mum passes on after 13 years of not seeing her son

 

Hajiya Fatima Al Mustapha died in Kano after a protracted illness on August 1 at the age of 70 without ever setting eyes on her son since his incarceration in 1998.

Major Hamza Al Mustapha was the Chief Security Officer of General Sani Abacha, former military head of state. He was arrested in 1998 for the murder of Kudirat Abiola and was sentenced to death by handing on 30 January 2012

Woman beats foster son to death for stealing N50

Tragedy struck at 8, Amosu Street, Ijegun, Lagos, on Sunday as a woman identified simply as Iya Anu, allegedly beat her foster son, Seubow, to death for allegedly stealing N50.
It was learnt that Iya Anu, a mother of four, usually inflicted injuries on Seubow, her husband’s nephew and her children whenever they erred.
Trouble started when 16-year-old Seubow misplaced a N1, 000 note given to him for an errand on Saturday.
The development, it was learnt, irked Iya Anu who starved the teenager throughout Saturday. When Seubow could no longer bear the hunger, he sneaked out of the house at night to buy Gala.
When Iya Anu knew about it, our correspondent learnt that she became furious, accused him of stealing her N50 and gave the teenager the beating of his life.
A neighbour who identified herself simply as Balikis said the accused must have used a hot object to batter the boy as his body was full of burns.
She said, “Iya Anu began to beat him on Saturday night. The beating continued till about 9am on Sunday when her husband and the other children had left for church.
“She battered him till he gave up the ghost about noon.  When she realised that the boy had lost consciousness, she cried for help but it was already late.  At a point, she wanted to run away but she was promptly rounded up.”
Another resident, Modinatu, said Iya Anu, had in June battered the boy resulting in her being invited to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division for questioning.
She said, “Seubow joined them in December 2011 and this woman has made life so unbearable for him just the way she does to her children too. In June, the boy was battered to the extent that she was quizzed by the police.
“Also, she has in the name of discipline used a knife to injure her first daughter, Anu, on her shoulders over issues bordering on misdemeanour.
 “She is so violent that she even fights neighbours with objects at the slightest provocation. She was sent packing from her former place of residence on Jimoh Aigbe Street, which is just some few streets away from here when she injured her landlady with a knife.”
Corroborating Modinatu’s claims, Alexander Akinnurun, the Proprietor of Alex Group of Schools, Ijegun, the school Seubow attended before his death, described her as a troublemaker.
 He said, “She has been perpetrating those acts for quite some time now and reports of her heinous deeds abound. In June, Seubow who happened to be one of my pupils came to school with a disfigured face and wounds on his body.
 “I was so moved by this that I reported the incident to the police. I don’t know how far the police went with the matter but I never expected that such an ugly incident would still repeat itself.”
When our correspondent visited the area on Monday, it was learnt that she had been arrested by the police.
It was also learnt Iya Anu was a serial divorcee and is at present with her third husband.
When contacted on the phone, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, said she could not reach the Divisional Police Officer of Isheri Oshun.
 “I can’t independently confirm the incident for now as the phone number of the DPO of the station is not available. I will get back to you as soon as I get through to him,” she said.

Dokubo-Asari calls for SNC, dissolution of Jonathan’s govt

LEADER of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, on Monday canvassed the dissolution of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s government to pave the way for the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference.

He said the conference was the only solution to the menace of the violent Islamist sect, Boko Haram, whose members are currently executing a bombing campaign against military and police facilities and churches especially in the northern states and Abuja.

“Whether he likes it or not, Goodluck Jonathan must convoke an SNC. There is a need for a national discourse and dialogue. It is only an SNC that will solve the problem. The solution to the Boko Haram crisis is to dissolve the government and convoke an SNC,” Dokubo-Asari told journalists at the meeting with youths of the Niger Delta in Abuja.

The ex-Niger Delta militant warned that if the Boko Haram issue could lead to another civil war if not tackled on time. He said the sect’s “arrogance” was unIslamic.

“The arrogance of Boko Haram is un-Islamic. The level of bombs they are using is low. If we begin throwing bombs, nobody will stay in Abuja,” the man who claimed to have started arms struggle in the oil rich Niger Delta said.

While threatening that the Niger Delta youths would retaliate if any evil should befall Jonathan, Dokubo-Asari however said the President had failed in the governance of the country.

“We are saying that nothing must happen to Goodluck Jonathan because if anything happens to him, the world will know.

“But we are not saying Goodluck Jonathan has tried. He has failed. What is Godswill Orubebe (Minister of Niger Delta) still doing in the federal cabinet? If Orubebe has failed, Jonathan has failed.

“A time will come if he didn’t change, our people would say, Goodluck, you are on your own. He has every power and every moral authority to convoke a Sovereign National Conference. He must correct the 55 years of injustice against us.”

On the face-off between ex-dictator Ibrahim Babangida and leader of the Ijaw nation/First Republic Minister of Information, Edwin Clark, over the Boko Haram menace, the NDPVF leader said IBB and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had no hands in the violence unleashed on the country by the sect.

Clark last week had accused Babangida of alleged complicity in the Boko Haram activities thus attracting a response from the ex-dictator camp that the first republic minister “is a loose cannon in public discourse.”

Dokubo-Asari said, “I want to be fair to IBB and Buhari on the Boko Haram crisis. They have nothing to do and cannot do anything about it. But the fact remains that the political elite of which IBB and Buhari belongs have not been able to address the problem of Boko Haram.

“They cannot do anything because nobody wants to commit suicide. The Boko Haram people are just killing themselves but cannot kill us.”

He also faulted the amnesty programme of the Federal Government which he said amounted to bribery and blackmail.

“The Amnesty is a bribe. I did not partake in the amnesty programme. That amnesty will not work because it amounts to criminalising people on account of kidnapping and they will later be settled. Amnesty was just a bribe for the oil to flow,” he said.

Nigerian emerges first PhD pharmacy graduate in 49-year-old UK varsity

A 27-year-old Nigerian, Dr. Bahijja Raimi-Abraham, made history by becoming the first graduate of Pharmacy from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom, to be awarded a PhD in Pharmacy. She shares her experience with Olabisi Deji-Folutile in this online interview.

 Were you born in the UK?

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria in April 1985 and left Nigeria at the age of six when my family returned to the UK – my parents had lived and studied in the UK previous to that.

After completing my primary school education in London, I attended secondary school in North Wales, Penrhos College – where my mother and her sisters also were educated; and following my GCSEs I returned to London for sixth form when I studied and passed the Advanced Level examinations (A – levels) in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Drama.

From where did you obtain your first degree?

I was accepted to read Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia – the University had just opened its School of Pharmacy and I was among the first intake of Pharmacy students.

The course was of four years in duration and led to the award of the MPharm degree. Following this, I applied to, and was accepted by Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital in central London to undergo my Pharmacy Pre-registration year. After passing my Pre-registration exams and attaining full status as a Pharmacist, I was invited by my alma mater, University of East Anglia, to apply and study for a Doctorate in Pharmaceutics.

How many students registered for the PhD programme?

To the best of my knowledge, there were seven of us in the School of Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia (UEA) when I started my PhD course in October 2008.

Were you also among the first set of students to register for PhD in the university?

No. UEA has been in existence for almost 50 years – it was established in 1963 and has produced PhD graduates for a number of years. The School of Pharmacy at UEA was opened to accept its first intake of Pharmacy undergraduates in 2003. I was among the first cohort of Pharmacy undergraduates to be admitted to the university that year. Approximately 90 of us were accepted for Pharmacy, and approximately 50 of us graduated with the award of MPharm (Masters Degree in Pharmacy) in 2007.  I am however, the first graduate of The School of Pharmacy at UEA to be awarded a PhD.

I consider this an achievement for myself no doubt, as well as for my family, the School of Pharmacy at UEA, as well as an achievement for Nigeria – the land of my birth!

What are your experiences in the course of your study?

Overall my experiences have been positive. Of course, studying Pharmacy and then pursuing a PhD has not been easy, both with their own challenges and different learning outcomes.  I have always tried to study areas that I have had a natural interest in.  For example, during my A-Level studies I thoroughly enjoyed Chemistry and on advice from my mother, I decided to study Pharmacy at university level. 

At the start of the second year of my undergraduate degree I decided I wanted to pursue the highest form of education and had a meeting with the then head of school and another member of the faculty (both later became my PhD supervisors) to discuss the requirement to study a PhD. Although my experiences have been positive, there have also been some challenges. But through it all, I’ve had the support of my lecturers and my family which motivated me to achieve. My study of Pharmacy instilled discipline in me as a professional – this discipline gained as a result of becoming a Pharmacist stood me in good stead as I embarked on my PhD course.

What are some of the challenges that blacks encounter in the UK?

Challenges encountered by blacks in the UK are as wide and as varied as you can imagine – because as with all other individual experiences, one must try to refrain from generalising. For me, my life in the UK has generally been positive. However one of the major challenges is the issue of stereotyping…a problem that, I suppose, can be faced anywhere in the world. Stereotyping leads to presumptions which often take a while to deconstruct.

For example, working as a locum Pharmacist I have had experiences when patients come into the pharmacy and speak to my white health care assistant first – somewhat assuming that perhaps I’m the health care assistant while the white member of staff is the pharmacist (and overall manager of the pharmacy on a given day!). I have had to be assertive – perhaps more than I would have had to be if I wasn’t black; assertive in ensuring that I am considered and respected in the workplace.

What are your personal experiences?

As I’ve said previously, my personal experiences have generally been positive. I attended primary school in London from the age of six and then for secondary school I attended a fee-paying boarding school in North Wales where I was athlete of the year for three consecutive years. I was also a member of the school netball and swimming teams; then sixth-form college in London for my A levels before attending University of East Anglia to study Pharmacy.

I also played netball for my university. Prior to starting my PhD I worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’Hospital in London for my Pharmacy Pre-registration year. During my entire educational life I would say that I’ve been fortunate to have met some extremely supportive people. In general, I’ve learnt life is what you make it – always do something that is natural to you and that you enjoy because if applied correctly, you will excel in it.

What is the population of blacks to whites in your school?

In my PhD group I was the only black student in a group of seven white people of mixed nationality.

Are there cases of lecturers victimising students there?

To the best of my knowledge there was no serious case of victimisation from lecturers. UEA has a robust complaints/grievance procedure which all students are made aware of.

What words of encouragement do you have for young people in your shoes either at home or abroad?

I would say to young people both at home and abroad that education is indeed the key to a myriad of life-changing opportunities. It is important to get a first degree so that you always have something to fall back on.

The choice of whether or not to progress to Masters degree level or indeed to Doctorate level can be made once the first hurdle is in sight or indeed after it has been achieved. Stay positive about life in general. Good things come to those who wait – don’t try and “grow old” before your time.

What are your plans for the future? Do you intend to return to Nigeria?

I plan to pursue a career in academia. I also plan to explore and avail myself of all the opportunities that are put before me. Included in this plan is my wish to make a contribution towards the development of pharmaceutical research and practice in Nigeria.

The University of East Anglia is a publicly-owned university. What is the rating of the university in the UK?

According to the Complete University Guide University League Table for 2012 and 2013, the University of East Anglia is the 27th best university in the UK. The School of Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia is ranked as No.1 in the UK!

Federal Government Announces Plans to Reintroduce Toll Gates on ALL Federal Roads

                                         

The Chairman of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Ezekiel Adeniji, has said that the Federal Government will soon reintroduce tollgates to federal roads across the country.
Tollgates were scrapped by former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo during his tenure. However, since his exit in 2007, there has been reports that the government was considering the return of tollgates to federal roads. This is likely especially as some states like Lagos have successfully introduced such on their roads.
The FERMA boss also said the agency would recruit 10,000 Nigerians from communities where it would be engaged in major road maintenance work before the end of the year.
In an interview with Economic Confidential, Adeniji did not give a specific date for the reintroduction of tollgates, but he said that tolling is for revenue generation and job creation.
“In developed countries, there is no place you go to that you don’t pay toll for the roads you use.
“If you are paying for water, electricity and communication, why can’t you pay for good roads? Tolling is universal. But the government that scrapped the tolling knows the reason why they scrapped it, and we also have reasons why we want to return it. It is as simple as that.
“Because when you toll, you get more revenue, you create more jobs and you have funds to maintain the roads.”

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will not meet the demand of Boko Haram that he embrace the Islamic faith and become its ardent member, or resign from office.

He said the demand amounts to both blackmail and rude intimidation.


Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, Jonathan said he would not resign as president as he was in power based on the mandate given to him by Nigerians in the 2011 presidential poll.


Abati said it was laughable for any group in the country to hand down such a condition to a president who was elected by both Muslims and Christians in last year's presidential poll even when it was not in contest that he was a Christian.


The presidential spokesman said, "When Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in the 2011 general election, they knew they were voting for a Christian.

"
He continues to enjoy the goodwill and support of the good people of Nigeria. As president, Dr. Jonathan is the leader of both Muslims and Christians; in fact he is the leader of persons of all faiths.

He said it amounted to sheer blackmail for any individual or group to ask the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convert to Islam.

"The president cannot be intimidated by any group or individual,” he said.
“The President will never resign. He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his father land and nobody should imagine that he will succumb to blackmail"

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said he would neither resign nor convert to Islam as demanded by the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, as a condition to ceasefire.

Jonathan, who spoke through his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, on a day that fivesoldiers died in an attack on a security patrol team in Damaturu, Yobe State, by a suspected Boko Haram bomber, described the call as “rude and a mere blackmail.”

“The President cannot be intimidated by any group or individual. The President will never resign. He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his father land and nobody should imagine that he will succumb to blackmail,” Abati told journalists in Abuja.

The sect, in a broadcast on Saturday asked Jonathan to either resign or change to Islam before it could lay down its arms against the country.

“We do not kill women and children but those who have offended us, arrested our people and kill them,” the group said in the wake of a promise by Jonathan to end its activities before the end of June this year.

In Damaturu on Sunday, a suicide bomber rammed his car into a military patrol van, killing himself and at least five soldiers. It was believed that the killer laid an ambush for the soldiers.

The state police commissioner, Patrick Egbuniwe, confirmed that there were military casualties. Egbuniwe, who did not provide figure, said that the suicide bomber was being chased by a military patrol vehicle when he blew himself up.

However, a security source said the bomber, who drove a sport utility vehicle had been parked along the roadside and then rammed into the military convoy.

Spokesman for the police in Yobe, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, said, “The gunman laid ambush on a security patrol team using explosive devices around Shagari Low Cost Housing area.”

Some residential properties in Shagari Low Cost Housing Estate were reportedly destroyed in the attack.

For about two years, bombings and gun attacks by Boko Haram have become commonplace in the northern part of the country including  Abuja.

The sect which has made negotiation with the government impossible says it is seeking the conversion of Nigeria to an Islamic state.

It had attacked the United Nations building in Abuja on August 26, 2011; the headquarters of the Nigeria Police on June 16, 2011; and the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, on Christmas Day.

AMCON begins sale of Nigeria Nationalized Banks this week

THERE are strong indications that the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) may have begun the process of selling off the three nationalised banks.
The affected banks are Mainstreet Bank Limited, Enterprise Bank Limited and Keystone Bank Limited.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the current effort might not be unconnected with the recent report of an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives on the causes of the near collapse of the capital market.
A reliable source at the AMCON’s office in Lagos told the Nigerian Tribune that the corporation had been working round the clock to pick financial advisers to handle the sale process, stressing that the shortlisted list would be made public this week.
The advisers were expected to evaluate and determine the value of the banks, evaluate all the options available to AMCON and would ensure that the process is transparent.
Efforts to get the identities of the shortlisted financial advisers and when they would begin work failed, as the Managing Director of the corporation, Mr Mustafa Chike-Obi, said the list would be made public this week.
Both local and internationals advisers were said to have indicated interest.
However, this is not the first time AMCON has said it was commencing the sale process, as in February, Chike-Obi had said at a meeting in Lagos that some investors had shown interest in the banks.
